The Philippines lost to Kuwait last night, 2-1. With the aggregate score of 5-1 in favor of Kuwait, this means that we’re officially out of the running for the 2014 World Cup. No excuses. Some of the coaching and playmaking decisions were definite head-scratchers but we clearly lost to a better team. Nevertheless, the fans at the stadium and those watching at home had reason to cheer last night, thanks to Stephan Schrock’s BEAUTIFUL goal at the end of the first half. Yes, I was one of those people going nuts at stadium. :)

Despite being knocked out of contention, there’s a lot to be proud of. This is the closest we’ve come to the World Cup, for Christ’s sake. We didn’t even attempt to qualify for the 2006 and 2010 tournaments. The Azkals definitely deserve props.

Just because we bowed out doesn’t mean that football fever has to die. We don’t have to wait until the qualifying rounds for the 2018 World Cup to cheer for the team. There’s the 2015 Asian Cup qualifiers which begin next year and the team also has some smaller tournaments lined up later this year. So chins up, Azkals fans. On to the next match!

Not a love story

Once upon a time, a girl met a boy. They didn’t hit it off at first. They argued constantly. Even so, they spent almost everyday together, bickering and laughing at each other. Everyone thought they were a couple despite the duo’s denials. After a year or so, the boy met another girl. He fell and fell hard. They started dating and things became serious fast.

So what happened to the first girl? She’s still there, still friends with the boy. Although they don’t see each other as often as they used to, they talk regularly and meet up for dinner every few weeks. They still bicker and laugh at each other. Yet behind the laughter, the girl keeps a sad little secret. Years ago, she fell in love with the boy. She just never told him. She never told anyone.

This is her attempt at letting someone, anyone, know what she feels for that boy. It’s the first step that she needs to take to move on. You see, the boy is on the verge of proposing to his girlfriend and the girl is determined to be completely over him by the time the wedding day comes. She’s spent enough time waiting for her happy ending. It’s time for her to go seek it out herself.

Today’s game against NU was a joy to watch, definitely the best game of the three games Ateneo has played so far. Although Studio 23 awarded player of the game to Kiefer Ravena, the win was a total team effort, with at least four players scoring in double digits. More proof that the win was a team effort? 30 assists. That’s right. THIRTY. One of the best plays of the game came late in the third quarter: Ravena drives to the basket, dishes a behind-the-back pass to Kirk Long, who kicks it out to Emman Monfort for the easy 2. Unselfish play right there. If the team plays this way the rest of the season, a four-peat is inevitable. One big fight!
